What Claude Code Really Costs

Pro is $20 a month, Max starts at $100. The June billing change was paused on its start day. What the official pages say as of October 2026.

PR: This article contains a placement for an affiliate program we plan to join (VPS hosting), chosen on price and region only. We found no Anthropic affiliate program.

How you think about Claude Code costs depends on whether you pay by subscription or by API usage. Every figure here was checked on official pages on October 16, 2026. Prices exclude tax.

Max gives 5x or 20x Pro’s usage per five-hour session, shared between chat and Claude Code. At the limit you wait, upgrade, or turn on usage credits at standard API rates (https://claude.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-16).

Once you have picked a plan, Getting Started with Claude Code covers installing it and a first session.

On the API

Anthropic’s docs say enterprise deployments average about $13 per developer per active day and $150–250 per developer per month, with 90% of users under $30 per active day (https://code.claude.com/docs/en/costs, checked 2026-10-16). Above roughly $150 a month, a flat Max plan is easier to budget. That is an enterprise average, not a personal forecast.

What happened to the June billing change

We had assumed headless billing changed in June. The primary source says otherwise:

Source: https://support.claude.com/en/articles/15036540-use-the-claude-agent-sdk-with-your-claude-plan (checked 2026-10-16).

When the change was announced, we turned off a nightly automation and a hook that wrote a handover file before compaction. We have not turned them back on. Unattended jobs get reviewed whenever billing changes.

Where spend grows

From the docs’ list of reasons usage climbs (https://code.claude.com/docs/en/costs, checked 2026-10-16):

Check with /usage.

Entry prices for other tools: compare with Cursor and Codex. Whether a local model avoids the bill: local LLMs.
